LEGO -- Build The Change

Last week, students from several schools attended LEGO -- Build the Change at Vizcaya Park in Miramar, Florida. How do I know? Because my son was one of the invited students. And because he continuously let me know how disappointed he was that he missed the opportunity while out of town at his Aunt's wedding.

The creativity of the models the kids built is pretty awesome. I'm frankly a little jealous I wasn't there myself! Anyway, the City of Miramar posted this video today. I recognize a few faces. How about you?

Girl Scouts of America: Miramar, Florida

I promised when I wrote about the Boy Scouts last month that I'd do the same for the Girl Scouts. Well, I haven't forgotten. Those of you in Miramar, your best bet is the Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida, which serves girls from Broward County north all the way to Indian River County.

Before I get started, if you Habla the Espanol, your website is here.

I found this page a very helpful resource, providing grade level program booklets and brochures, event calendars and helpful contact information.

So what do the Girl Scouts do in Southeast Florida? Well, looking at their calendar, they go hiking and swimming and camping: and they attend Marlins games and visit Nickelodeon, all divided up for age appropriateness. But Girl Scouts also participate in community service events, take part in skill building classes, and learn about other cultures. Remember, the Girl Scout Mission is to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. So I'm sure that besides all the fun, there is plenty of teaching and learning happening, too.

The Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida have three camps: Camp Welaka in Tequesta, Camp Nocatee in Clewiston and Camp Telogia in Parkland. They are used for outdoor get-togethers and summer camp and other activities throughout the year.

The Girl Scouts of the USA website offers lots of other information that is relevant for all chapters and locations. I'd start with the About Page.  They also have a National Convention each year. This year will be their 52nd Convention taking place in Houston, Texas, on November 8-13.

Getting back to the local Girl Scouts, here are some frequently requested contacts; if that proves insufficient, here is a full staff directory. And for sure go check out the other information.

Miramar Optimist Baseball: Fall 2012

I just got back from a coaches' meeting with the new Miramar Optimist President and the new Miramar Optimist Baseball Commissioner. Yes, I'm a coach for the 6 and under division again this year.

We are very excited to be starting a new season next week, right after Labor Day, and it is definitely not too late to get started. There will be sign ups tomorrow and Saturday morning as well as all next week and beyond if you are reading this late. Please ask questions in the comments and I'll be happy to do my best to get you the answers.

Players, boys and girls, from age 3-16 will have a lot of fun, get plenty of exercise, learn the game of baseball, learn teamwork and sportsmanship. We play at Silver Lakes Sports Complex over by Memorial Hospital Miramar.

I hope to see you there.

Independence Day 2012 Fireworks and Celebration: Miramar, Florida

This year, Independence Day, July 4, 2012 is on a Wednesday. That didn't stop the City of Miramar, Florida from planning a mid-week celebration, a family event including a concert and fireworks display.

Starting at 6 pm at Miramar Regional Park, the celebration includes Free bounce houses and a Free concert by No Mercy. Food and drink are available for purchase.

At 9 pm, the fireworks display will commence. Bring blankets and chairs and insect repellent. DON'T Bring glass bottles, fireworks (including sparklers), pets, and use your good judgment for everything else.

Here is the City's announcement of the event.

Miramar Regional Park is west of I-75 at 16801 Miramar Parkway, just before Super Target.

Though they gave some recognition to the band, they didn't link any No Mercy videos, which you can see here:

Easter Egg Hunt: Miramar, Florida

I've told you in the past about the huge Easter Egg hunts that Calvary Fellowship has after each of its Easter services. And this year, Sunday, April 8, 2012, they will be holding them again, with an iPod Touch being given away at each one. So expect to have some fun!

But since I'm a regular attender, consider this my invitation to you to come celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus and hear an awesome Easter message. If you've never heard this message, even better. Bring the family and children--all will feel welcomed.

The services are held at 10 and 11:30 am at Everglades High School, 17100 SW 48 Court, Miramar, FL 33027. Here are some directions.

Hope to see you there!
