WTVJ NBC 6 Miami was the first Florida TV station and only the 16th in the country, going on air in 1949. WSCV Telemundo 51 went on air in 1968, and they share the studio and office space in Miramar.
I found some fun facts on Wikipedia, many of which I didn't verify, so don't cite this in your academic research. LOL.
- When Jackie Gleason moved his show to Miami Beach in 1964, WTVJ was the producing station.
- After WTVJ founder Mitchell Wolfson died in 1983, the station was taken over by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (KKR) for $1 billion, the largest corporate buyout ever at the time.
- WTVJ covered the Hurricane Andrew disaster non-stop in 1992, winning Emmys with Meteorologist Bryan Norcross at the helm.
- In 2008, the station was sold then the sale was challenged then eventually canceled. NBCMiami.com was launched in 2009.
- WSCV Telemundo 51 also has a wiki page that has some interesting information about the history of the station and it's programming, some awards it's won as well as some firsts in Spanish broadcasting.
