Miramar Optimist Club and Miramar Baseball

Update 5/24/2011: The information and photos below are still valuable, except for the dates for the Spring 2011 season, which is over. Here is a simple update with dates of interest for the Fall 2011 season.

Sorry it's been a while since I posted anything here. I make no excuses.

Note: There are important updates at the bottom! And a handful of photos as well.

Over the past month, I've been doing research on how to get my 8 year old son involved with Little League Baseball here in Miramar, Florida. And it has not been very easy to get that information. So let me share what I know.

The Miramar Optimist Club is a non-profit organization with a board of directors that oversees a bunch of sports programs in the city and works to help the youth of the community. You can find out more general information at their website or contact them here. Here is a list of the programs they offer as well.

Miramar Optimist Club
P.O. Box 260735
Pembroke Pines, FL 33026
Phone: 954-430-1031

As I mentioned, I am interested in the baseball program for an 8 year old beginner. I tried contacting all the people and some of the coaches and even club board members regarding information on the next season. I was getting frustrated with little information, no replies and sparse updates, but with a little due diligence and patience, I was able to gather some additional information. You can visit their website, but it's a bit of a jumble and hard to ever know when updates are added. So pay attention and visit their website daily if you really want to know something.

Most importantly, the next season has its registration open NOW, so if you're interested, read on and don't hesitate. I will be going to the park later today to register and will give any new information when I know it.

Next, this is where they play. It's north of Miramar Parkway, so you don't drive around like an idiot like me. Also, the phone hotline is just a recording with some very basic info. No one will call you back and they even say "don't leave a message".

The website right now is calling this upcoming season Fall 2010 and Winter 2011, while the registration form is titled Spring 2011. I am certainly not sure what the season is officially called, but I think Fall 2010 is out since they also name the Fall 2010 champions. Regardless, as I mentioned above, current open registration is now. Here are the times they have listed:

Open Registration for Winter 2011:
Mon. 11/29 - Fri. 12/03: 6:30 p - 7:30 p
Sat. 12/04: 10:00 a - 12:00 p

This is the most recent update they gave and it will answer some questions you probably have, though likely not all of them.

Registration forms: Can be printed out from the above website under Forms & Registration; also available during park office registration. Me: There are other forms but this is the registration form.

Items needed to register: A completed registration form, a copy of the players birth certificate, and proof of residence with a credit card, debit, or money order payment only. (No cash or checks accepted).  Me: (It sounds like they may have changed the payment methods at some point because even the current registration form talks about "returned checks" and "cash payment receipts". I'd personally go with a checkbook and credit card and figure it out there. I'll try to ask for clarification as well.)

Prices and Age chart: Check the front of the registration form for prices by division. On the back of the registration form (or page 2) you will find an age chart, which determines which division your child will play. Me: (Basically, the registration fee will depend on what age group your child is in and if you are a City of Miramar resident).

Assigned days of play:
4U - Thursday night, Saturday morning
6U - Tuesday & Friday night, and Saturday mornings
8U - Monday & Wednesday night, and Saturday mornings
     10U - Monday & Wednesday night, Saturdays
     12U - Tuesday & Friday night, Saturdays
     14U & 16U- days and times vary.

Uniforms: Players will receive a full uniform: jersey, pants, cap, and one pair of socks. Belts for looped pants are provided for the coach pitch division or higher. Gloves and cleats are not included and must be supplied by the player. Cleats are optional for Peewee division. Metal cleats only allowed in 14U and 16U divisions.

Equipment: All players will need an age/size appropriate baseball glove. Athletic cups are highly recommended and required by most coaches and umpires. Bats, helmets and other items are purchased at your discretion. Consult with your coach.

Trophies: All participants will receive a trophy at the end of the season.

Important Dates: Check website www.miramaroptimist.org or www.miramarbaseball.com for information about tryouts, when practice begins, opening day, etc. Me:  (I don't see any other important dates posted as of 11/30/2010, but will try to pay attention. Again, go to their site frequently as updates magically appear).

SPONSORSHIP: If you would like or know of a company that would like to sponsor a team or our program, please see the form on the website under Forms and Registration.

Without copying everything from that page, you can also see the coaches for each division and have their contact information. There are coaching and other volunteer opportunities as well.

I can't wait to get involved. Little League baseball was a big part of my childhood and I'm very pleased my son is finally getting interested. If you are part of this organization or have any additional information or if you think I've made and error or just have tips for us newbies, please leave a comment.

Update later same evening: So I went to the registration. There was no line. In fact, the Commissioner, Coach Lewis/Luis/Not sure, put one of his assistant coaches in charge of a practice while he unlocked the office just for me. He said there would be a skills tryout sometime in January, but that I needed to keep checking the website for those dates. Apparently, the tryout is so the coaches can see the kids' skills. But if they don't make the tryout, their names go into a hat for random selection afterward.

Again. Let me know your experiences.

Update next day 12/1/2010: First, there is an awesome comment below from one of the coaches this year. Thank you so much, Yandro. I'll be sure to introduce myself one of those days. Here are some very important dates, including additional registration dates.

Miramar Business Center: Miramar, Florida

Guess what, Miramar? This city has some major industry. Atlanta-based, industrial real estate expert IDI built three huge buildings between Red Road and Flamingo Road on Miramar Parkway over the past 9 years. Here are some specifications for the third, Building C, just so you can get some perspective on the 30-foot ceilings! There is a contact from the company on that document, but my guess is that he was involved with the design or PR or something related to it being built. I did email him to see if there was leasing information he could help me find. I'll update that here if I find out. (BTW, if you know, feel free to fill me in.)

I did manage to come across one real estate listing with a broker contact and phone number. Perhaps if your company is seriously considering leasing space here, this would be a decent place to start. I probably just don't understand the undertaking that leasing one of these places requires. I doubt it's like calling Sally down at the corner office and faxing over a reference or two.

Anyway, this place has a ton of offices and loading docks, etc, with some big-time company names. These would be some of your neighbors. And if you live in Miramar, it's pretty cool that we have major industrial companies around the corner.

Hess Express: Flamingo Road and Miramar Parkway, Miramar Florida

Hola. It's been a month or so, but I am still around. Was on vacation for 10 days in New Jersey with my extended family. I took a few dozen photos yesterday of the area around Flamingo Road with Miramar Parkway, so stay tuned to find out about the explosion of businesses and housing communities there.

My intention was to go past Red Road and snap a few of the Police Department and Culinary Institute and others, but I was amazed at how many awesome companies are in my city, and didn't make it that far. Yet!

Hess Express, pictured above, which includes a Godfather's Pizza and Blimpie, is only a few years old. Hess and the CVS next to it were built on part of a pasture, which still exists. They just took the corner. I get gas here 50 weeks a year (the other two weeks I am out of town or need to get gas there on a Friday instead). Besides being ultra convenient for me, this Hess has the best prices in at least 15 miles, within a penny or two; it's never out of gas, and there are plenty of pumps. Bonus: there is a car wash and a WORKING free air machine for your tires. I'm sure you guys at MY Hess wont make me eat those words!

If you see a really cool guy there on Saturday mornings, be sure to say hello! If it's not me, well, you just made a different friend in this awesome city!

Hess Express

I can't find their phone number! At the same time, I have NEVER called a gas station before. Leave a comment if you have it or a reason for me to stop in and ask for it!

Fairway Park and Community Garden: Miramar, Florida

A little over a month ago, The City of Miramar had its Grand Opening for the Fairway Park and Community Garden. This community garden project was the idea of Mayor Lori Moseley. Mayor Moseley envisioned a project that would strengthen the community bonds immediately surrounding the new park, while providing a sustainable and environmentally sound source of fresh foods. Here is a presentation that the City made leading up to the Grand Opening.

A terrific overview by the City can be found here. You will find out about the garden, its sponsors and its volunteers. The volunteer application is closed as of today but will reopen as necessary.  You can also find out about the crops being grown there, learn how this project is green in many ways, and see a ton of ongoing photos. The photo above is from the Grand Opening and can be found amongst those on the linked page.

The garden's address, located in Fairway Park is:

Miramar Community Garden
3700 Largo Drive
Miramar, FL 33023
(954) 967-1611

Apparently this is just one of many things the City of Miramar is doing to be a Green city. Here is a list of many of the projects and initiatives that are in the works.

On a final note, and completely related, as I was doing research for this piece, I came across this really cool blog called South Florida Challenges. This guy is basically doing what the Miramar Community Garden is doing, but in his own back yard. He's trying to turn his Miramar back yard into an organic sustainable garden, and invites you to learn as he has from his triumphs and tribulations. There are lots of great photos and lessons, including how to take care of the insects (something I need to learn), so if this is something you've been thinking about or are inspired, check it out!

Independence Day: July 4, 2010, Miramar, Florida

I spent the last 20 minutes digging around the internet for some information about picnics and activities and fireworks that are going to take place in Miramar, Florida this year. (You didn't think I was going to say Tulsa, Oklahoma, did you?) I also double and triple-checked the spelling for "Independence" despite being 99.9% confident I knew my spelling was correct. You see, for three days now, I've passed the parents' message board at my kid's school (daycare) that wished me a Happy Independance Day, but of course that is in Pembroke Pines. LOL.

Anyway, it seems in the past few years there were contests and activities and concerts and pie-eating contests, but I didn't find any of that this year. They may exist, and if you know something I don't, please tell me. But it appears to me that this year will be more low-key, as the City of Miramar is suggesting you make the evening into a family picnic, bringing your own refreshments and blankets and watching the 9pm fireworks display afterward.

This is directly from the City's website:

July 4th 2010

The City of Miramar and All Service Refuse will celebrate Independence Day on July 4th with a special fireworks display at 9 p.m. at Miramar Regional Park, 16801 Miramar Parkway.

Make it a very special family evening picnic and bring your own refreshments, blankets and chairs. Safety regulations prohibit fireworks, glass bottles, sparklers and animals at this event.

Admission to the park is $1.50 per person. Children 5 and under are free.

For further information, please call (954) 602-3319.

Anyway, besides the fireworks, I hope all of you will be displaying an American Flag where you live and spend some time teaching your children what the Fourth of July is all about. Besides just the historical aspects, teach them the Pledge of Allegiance and the Star-Spangled Banner and a few other patriotic songs like God Bless America and how to properly display and fold the Flag.

Pledge of Allegiance

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

Have a wonderful holiday! Be safe! Watch your kids! Don't drink and drive!

Smitty's Grille Miramar, Florida

I've noticed and heard that some of you have been coming to this website to find information and a menu from Smitty's Grille, located on the corner of Miramar Parkway and Flamingo Road in the Miramar Square Plaza. Not to deny you loyal readers the pleasure, I stopped by there on the way home last night to get just that.

Now I don't have a lot of input other than the interior looked pretty nice, the guy working there was friendly, and they had a nice sized TV with a World Cup game on. But I had left my two kids in the car, so I was in and out in under a minute. Here's the menu; this says it's the Take Out/Delivery Menu though it includes other things; you'll have to tell me if they have a different Dine In Menu. But this is a start. I'm going to have to stop sometime to eat. Take out, delivery, family deals, party buckets, catering--looks like my kind of place! Be sure to tell them where you got your information when you go or call. And... as Nick Burns says on Saturday Night Live, "By the way, you're welcome!"

Miramar Centre Corporate Park: Miramar, Florida

OK. I've taken a bunch of pictures of local retail stores in the area recently. But Miramar is also the home of some top notch corporations and businesses of all sizes that don't necessarily have a store front.

Just off of I-75 on Miramar Parkway on both the East and West sides are some awesome examples. You'll have to wait for the NBC and Carnival and USPS side for another night. The pictures you see below include the marquis names in Miramar Centre Corporate Park, which is on the southwestern corner of I-75 with Miramar Parkway, with its entrance from Dykes Road. If you're really tall, it's across from Home Depot in The Fountains of Miramar.

There are lots of offices besides the three below with their names on the buildings. If you're looking for office space, this location is super convenient and the buildings and property are spectacular. Click the link above for contact information, and let Donna know where you heard about the space.

I took this picture moving in traffic from Miramar Parkway. The building on the left is Humana and the one on the right is Principal Financial Group. There is another behind the Humana building highlighting the CBeyond tenant. Damn car driving on the other side got in my way!

Blessed John XXIII Roman Catholic Church: Miramar, Florida

I'm not Catholic, so correct me if I use any wrong terminology, but considering my Baptist upbringing, I'm pretty sure this will suffice. I took these pictures tonight of Blessed John XXIII Roman Catholic Church, which happens to be across the street from Miramar Regional Park, where I happened to be taking my son for swimming lessons. Since I was there around 7:10, you'll see from the mass schedule below that the parking lot was full and I was intruding on one. Sorry. Actually, Lo siento, considering it was a Spanish mass. So that's why the dude cursed me out in Spanish (just joking).

This is where you can find the church and how you can contact them, so now you can fax over you confessions. Sorry if that might be in bad taste.

Guys, sorry that this sign is sideways, but don't bother telling me. I already know. Turn your head or your computer because 1. I am using a computer that I have no idea where to rotate this thing; and 2. it builds character! I wont fix it! This schedule is posted right outside the church. The info below I got from their website, and it seems to be the same, just presented a little differently, so be sure to double-check everything before showing up and being disappointed.

RCIA: Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults - Thursdays in English and Spanish at 7:00 PM.

Finally, here is a really nice history about John XXIII, who was Pope from 1958 to 1963. He was an Italian-born Pope. So if you are Catholic or are interested in joining the church, I'm pretty sure you'd be welcomed here. Let me know if you have further information you'd like to share about the church, masses, anything.

Publix Plaza Miramar Florida

I'm not sure it's called Publix Plaza, but since it's the biggest store and the one I visit the most, that's what I'm gonna call it. The people in this Publix expect to see me every Saturday with at least one kid, and if they don't, they send the search team. Cashiers hold their breath for me and my kids, hoping we choose another lane. LOL.

BTW, if you see the Boy Scouts out front selling their "Go To Camp" coupons for $5, buy a few. One end of that coupon is a $5 off a $50 purchase at Publix. I don't know about you, but for me it's impossible to go to Publix and spend less. Also, that coupon gets you 6 free donuts from Dunkin' Donuts (when you buy 6), which is also in the plaza, $3 off haircuts multiple times at SuperCuts, and some other Pollo Tropical coupons I haven't used. So check the Publix coupon expiration date and if it's a month or more away, but two or four of these. Help the scouts out!

So this particular Publix Plaza is on Miramar Parkway about half a mile East of I-75. When I first moved to Miramar, the light on Miramar Parkway in front of the plaza didn't exist, so it was a major hassle to get in and out of the parking lots. When they finally installed the new traffic light there, it was most welcome. Also, there was not a restaurant in front of the Publix at that point, which is now home to the Can Cun Grill. I've been to a lot of Publix's and this is perhaps the one I like the most of all, at least near the very top.

The Shoppes at Silver Isles

My four-year old had swimming lessons at the Miramar Regional Park Aquatic Complex a few nights ago. We were ten minutes early so I decided to take some photographs at The Shoppes at Silver Isles, which is just East of the park and just West of Dykes Road, on Miramar Parkway. Driving by, it doesn't seem like there are a lot of stores there, but let me tell you, this place is longer and goes back further than you might think, with CVS and Chili's anchoring the ends. I believe the shopping complex is also connected to the community with the same Silver Isles name.

Here are most of the stores, though I know I missed a few. And some others are not singled out. Remember, I was only had ten minutes to spare and was with a four year old. Send me a better picture and a reason to post it, and I'll be happy to add your review! Also, some I don't have the complete names which is complicating giving an address and number. In no particular order (I put the address, you recreate it in your head)...
